Joao Salomao holds a Civil Engineering degree from Universidade Eduardo Mondlane (Mozambique), class of 1975, a Postgraduate Diploma, with distinction in Sanitary Engineering, from the International Institute for Hydraulic and Environmental Engineering, Delft, The Netherlands, class of 1980, and a magnum cum laude Doctorate in Civil Engineering from Universidade do Minho (Portugal) in 1986.He was Assistant Professor at Universidade Eduardo Mondlane till 2004.
He was Minister of Public Works and Housing in the Government of the Republic of Mozambique from 1987 to 1994.
He was a management and engineering consultant in Mozambique, South Africa and Angola from 1994 until he retired in 2015.
Having come out of retirement in 2021, he has been working in conservation, being currently the Mozambique representative of African Parks, a non-profit conservation organisation responsible for the long-term management of protected areas in partnership with governments and local communities.
He is an unpaid volunteer and patient advocate in cancer issues, supporting The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston since 2018 to date, in Washington, D.C., Mozambique, Lesotho and Malawi.
